Things are going great over here. Waiting on some stuff from Sandra before I can continue the screenplay adaption for “The Guide to Being Fabulous,” so I am back to work on “Novitiate,” for now.

And also — yes! I’ve decided to begin studying Ancient Hebrew. I bought that course over a year ago, looked it over, and then immediately thought: No way do I have time to do this…

But since I am re-studying Biblical Hebrew now, I thought : Why not do it side by side?

By the way — I joined Ross K. Nichols’ Patreon group, in order to learn Biblical Hebrew by reading the Book of Genesis in Hebrew in a group-study setting. (I gave up on the YouTube course, which was all spoken Hebrew, and I went back to focusing on reading and writing it.)

So, anyway, now I’ve just added a column to write down the Ancient Hebrew letter along with the Biblical Aleph-Bet. (Ancient Hebrew is a paleo alphabet, sort of like hieroglyphics.) (And, interestingly enough, some of the letters remind me a lot of the Chinese characters, which I learned when I was studying Mandarin.)

Anyway! I’m doing all this because I have so much free time!!

And, yes, I’m still studying French!! Loyal readers of this lofty blog know by now that this is something I do eternally. Study French. I have literally been “studying French” since I was a wee bonny lass in Cleveland, in 1969.

Yesterday, a sentence came up that really amused me. The French lesson dealt with going to the zoo, and the sentence was (in French): “The zebras and gorillas are here.”

What a great sentence to know in French, right? Especially if you aren’t anywhere near a zoo… For instance, if the doorbell rings and when you answer the door…

That’s right — no ice, no snow, no rain, no high winds, no freezing temperatures!

And, best yet, no FOG!!

I drove home from the train station last night in the worst fog I’d ever seen, and so I missed my freeway exit. Never did that before.

Luckily, one of my current houseguests was with me because he works at the train station, too. He turned on the GPS on his phone and even though it was pitch dark, and raining, with all that heavy fog, he was able to direct me to a road I actually recognized.

But it was like being in a dream sequence inside a movie. I kept saying, “Where are we?!” And he kept saying, “Just go straight. 3rd Street is right up there.”

“How can it be right up there?! I’ve never seen this road before! I’ve never seen these houses!” And then suddenly a bunch of deer appeared, strolling through the fog just up in front of me…like they had all the time in the world…

But my passenger was absolutely right. Suddenly, from out of the fog, appears the bright shining sign of my bank. It was too weird. Everything instantly became absolutely familiar, even in the fog! (We’d come up from behind my bank— a direction I’d never come from before.)

It was really too funny. And then, when I pulled up to the curb in front of my kitchen porch, KonTiki and Blackie-the-stray and one of the raccoons who lives in my barn were hanging out together on my porch, waiting to greet us — in the fog and the rain and the dark of night.

Yes, you’d think hillbillies live here!!!

Anyway. An enchanting evening was had by all.

And I am in good spirits despite the stress! Sandra’s initial response to the first draft of the first 5 pages of the screen adaptation of “The Guide to Being Fabulous” — “This is delightful!”

On Sunday, we will begin fleshing it out.

I was planning to head into town today to run the errands, but I’ve decided to go tomorrow, instead.

My houseguests are gone for most of the day and I have a ton of intense focusing to do around here, so I think I’ll take advantage of a totally empty house! (Except for the many, many cats who currently call this crazy place home…)

Okay. I have decided to divide my days into two sections and work on two different projects at once.

Yesterday, I spent about 2 hours working on “Novitiate” , but I didn’t make much headway in it. (If I recall correctly, it yielded three paragraphs. But they are paragraphs worth keeping, so that’s saying something.)

I spent the rest of the day, preparing to adapt “The Guide to Being Fabulous” into a screenplay format. I only need a few pages of it to include in our promo package. (See yesterday’s post.) But I need to get this done right away.

Here are two interesting things, though: For some reason, Sandra asked me to use a version of the play that we wrote back in 2017. (I have every version of the play that we’ve worked on since 2014.) As I was reading over the 2017 version of it yesterday, I thought: Wow! This is fantastic!

(Loyal readers of this lofty blog know that I wasn’t 100% keen on the Toronto version of the play. But I’m not going to go into that.)

Anyway, so I was pleasantly surprised to go back in time and encounter an older version of “The Guide to Being Fabulous” that was, well — fabulous.

The next interesting thing — I have spent the past 4 years focusing on writing various plays, and plays and screenplays are written in different formats.

I hadn’t written a screenplay since the last time Peitor and I worked on Lita måste gå! (Lita’s Got to Go!), back in 2020. And I’m on my 3rd laptop since 2020.

Which meant I had to go find my last version of Final Draft (screenwriting software), back on my laptop from 2020. Which, allegedly, began to go wonky in 2020, but 2 laptops later, that first one suddenly works perfectly fine… hmmmmm.

And because of that cloud drive thingie, everything I have on my current laptop, suddenly popped up on the one from 2020….

Just so weird. But what an incredibly convenient thing! So I’m working on the screenplay on an entirely different (and really small) laptop. Which means it is less distracting and helps keep me focused.

I just found it really weird. But in a good way.

And on that note… I gotta get to work here.

In personal news–

Sandra and I officially got back to work yesterday on our play, “The Guide to Being Fabulous”, and our plans for launching it off-Broadway in NYC. We are planning for it to be a basic staged reading, first. So keep your eyes peeled on this blog for when/where and how you, too, can attend!!

However, the other big news regarding the play — unfortunately, I can’t be too specific on the blog yet, but we are putting together a brief synopsis, sample script, promo package, for her agent to send to a production company at a specific cable movie streamer (think: most popular super neo-Marxist Leftist movie streamer on cable!!).

That’s right! Time to turn Sandra’s amazing life story into a bio-pic for cable!! Yay!

Also — stay tuned for details on my possible trip this June to Villefranche-sur-mer, in the South of France, to hook up with Wayne (my ex-husband in NYC), and take a trip together into Italy and the Alps!!

Our main reason for meeting in Villefranche-sur-mer, is because he will already be there and I want to visit the front gates of Nellcôte and stare at those gates and marvel — and I really want to do all that staring and marveling with Wayne!!

Nellcôte was where Keith Richards lived in 1971 and where the Rolling Stones recorded their utterly amazing classic double-album, Exile On Main St.

I now need to rest up for my evening shift at the train station… as a personal aside:

For, literally, the last 9 months, I have been asking the Management of the train station (as politely as possible, which sometimes isn’t saying a whole lot) if they would be more diligent about posting to social media that there is even an evening shift at all, let alone what our hours are, that we have a liquor license, etc.

Maybe once or twice a month, the PR-social media person would throw us a bone and post something, but, sure enough, then we would be really busy that night.

Well, now that they have cut back my hours, I got pretty angry and I once again said sort of “firmly” that they have to do something about posting to social media, etc. etc., before they get rid of our shift entirely. We are located at the edge of a very small town, just over the hill from the ancient graveyard, tucked between the lumberyard, the mill, an old abandoned refinery of some kind, a gas station and a small general store. About 5 people in town know that we’re even open at night. But it is my firm conviction that we are sitting on a proverbial GOLD mine on the evening shift….

Long story short, they FINALLY listened to me. They gave me (I’m the evening supervisor) the password to Instagram and said that I could be responsible for the social media posts for the evening shifts…

Yesterday was my first day doing that. And yesterday evening was well below freezing with snow and high winds. Still, I thought the Instagram post would help….and we got slammed. The entire place was filled with happy drinkers & merry diners. And a few minutes before closing, I was turning away a party of 9 because we had no tables left.

We got out of there last night an hour and a half later than we usually do, and I’m very tired this morning.

But what’s really scaring me…

On Thursday, I asked the Management if maybe we could offer specials on house wines one night a week… that could help bring in customers on cold winter nights…

Yesterday at the start of the evening shift, they told me: “Okay, Marilyn! Starting tomorrow, you’re gonna have Happy Hour from 4 – 6 every evening!”

Well, yay! But, oh fuck…. something tells me I am going to be indescribably exhausted by tomorrow. (Ad infinitum for the rest of the winter…)

We shall see.

And, speaking of tomorrow — Sandra and I get back to work on our play, “The Guide to Being Fabulous” as we get it ready for New York!

I no longer attend my church because it is now 2 hours’ worth of driving from the Hinterlands, but I do sort of “spiritually” consider it my church.

On Monday — Martin Luther King Day — the church began a new book in their monthly book club. It was apparently Martin Luther King’s favorite book. It looked interesting to me, so I went ahead and bought it. And, wow, gang! What an incredible book!!!

Written in 1948, by Howard Thurman, Jesus and the Disinherited.

If you are in the clergy in any way, or you study Jesus of Nazareth in some capacity, you will likely really enjoy this book — if you haven’t read it already.

That’s kind of it for right now, since I spent the first part of my morning catching up on Phil’s Q&A. I haven’t really looked at anything else yet.

I will say that I’m really over this freezing weather around here. Yesterday, I had to be the “woman homesteader” and unfreeze the pipes and drains and toilet in the upstairs bathroom, especially since that is the bathroom that my houseguests use. (My house is 123 years old and the upstairs bathroom was added a few decades after the house was built. It has no heating duct in there and gets really cold.)

That only took about 2 hours….but I did it. And now I have a milkhouse heater running in there nonstop for the next few days. (Can’t wait to see that electric bill….)

And I am happy to report — on another topic — that I am making good progress with the new novella, “Novitiate.”

If you are a writer, too, you likely know the feeling when a book or story is “writing itself” and just using you as the medium to get itself onto the paper.

“Novitiate” is like that for me. I have all these disturbing notes from 1966, and I have no clue how they will fit themselves into the deceptively simple erotic story I thought I was telling. But, little by little, it’s happening. However, yesterday, after working on the manuscript for about 3 hours, when “the bikers” (as in motorcycles) suddenly showed up at the campsite, I stopped for the day!

[Where the heck did these bikers come from??!! This can’t be good!!!}
