Alive in Cleveland

The drive to Cleveland yesterday was awesome, gang. It was a 2 1/2-hour drive, but only the final half-hour was on a freeway. The rest of it was on backroads through incredible farmlands, rolling hills, trees, trees, trees, and a few ponds and streams. Cows, horses, Amish country, beautiful old barns, and old country churches.

Cleveland, of course, has changed enormously since my wee bonny girlhood, but this is not the first time I’ve been here since my wee bonny girlhood.

Btw— that splendid weather we were supposed to have did not materialize. It’s dismal and grey here, and luckily I remembered to bring a jacket because it’s a lot cooler than was expected, too.

I’m thinking that the Nick Cave concert tonight will be very good, and I’m hoping this will be true, because honestly, gang, I just want to get back into my car and go back to the country. Not only is it expensive here, but nothing around the hotel has any food that is organic or fresh from the farms. The food tastes terrible. And the people seem sort of gloomy. There are plenty of homeless people begging for money, etc. Like the old days back in NYC, but without the incredible energy of the old New York.

Last night, I went to the Cleveland Art Institute because I had a ticket to see the new documentary film, “Mutiny in Heaven,” about Nick Cave and his first band, The Birthday Party (an evolution of the band The Boys Next Door). Wow, was it depressing. Even though I could still relate to a lot of what was uplifting from that era of music — through most of the life-span of The Birthday Party, I was already in NYC, heavily involved in all the various genre of the music scene back then. But, Jesus. Most of what was in that film was just depressing and some of it was vile and nauseating. Plus, I love Rowland S. Howard and for me, his sad and sort of tragic death was haunting that whole film.

The most interesting part of the evening, though, was that the Uber I needed to take to the movie theater and back, cost me a whopping $100. Yes, to a theater (& back) that is only 4 miles from my hotel. If I had tried to drive there, find a place to park, and find my way back to my hotel I would have gotten hopelessly lost. So Uber it was.

One nice thing, though, both of the Uber drivers I had were really friendly and chatty. One was from Afghanistan and the other one was from Turkey. Both of them loved Cleveland, so that was nice.

Truthfully, if it weren’t for the fact that my grandparents are buried here, I would probably never come back to Cleveland. But Kara and I are already planning another day trip here (to the other side of Cleveland) to go visit my grandparents’ graves.

All right, I guess that’s it for now. Today I am doing nothing, really, except waiting for Nick Cave’s show because I am almost out of money. (Meaning, money that I loaded onto my debit card before I left home.) I’m planning to chat with Sandra today, to find out how rehearsals have been going in Toronto. And I think Valerie is calling from Brooklyn today, too. So that’s it.

Okay.

I hope you’re having a great Monday, wherever you are in the world.

Thanks for visiting. I love you guys. See ya!

Getting Ready for that Trip to Cleveland!

The route I am taking to Cleveland tomorrow will be a brand new one for me, gang. All backroads and State Highways. It should be beautiful. The weather is supposed to be splendid. We shall see!

Nick Cave will be performing in what is now called the KeyBank State Theater (how lovely, right? Sounds straight out of the USSR). A long time ago, though — meaning, in my wee bonny girlhood — it used to be called the Cleveland Playhouse and it had a wonderful theatrical history. But now the whole surrounding area is called “Playhouse Square” and is a collection of several theaters.

Anyway, I have not been to this theater since my wee bonny girlhood — yes, when the USSR was pretty much only in the USSR. I was last in the Cleveland Playhouse with my grandmother, who was my favorite person on Earth and who has been gone a long, long time now. I’m sure my memories will feel overwhelming while I’m there.

Cleveland Playhouse. Now called “State Theater of the Union Republic”

If you’re in Washington DC right this very minute — Nick Cave is doing a book signing at 11AM at a bookshop called Politics and Prose, at 5015 Connecticut Ave NW.

Tonight he’s performing in DC, also, but it is already sold out.

Okay I’ve got stuff to do because I need to work at the train station tonight (and btw — that new cocktail that is named after me is kind of a big hit. See Thursday’s post). Mostly I just wanted to make sure you knew that Phil is planning to go live tonight at 8PM Eastern time.

Okay, I gotta scurry!

Enjoy your Saturday wherever you are in the world!

Thanks for visiting. I love you guys. See ya!

I will most likely be playing this tomorrow…. my usual driving-for-a-long-time-on-a-sunny-day music! Tom Petty & the Heartbreaker’s live version of “Runnin’ Down A Dream”. (I miss you so much, Tom.) Okay. Enjoy!!

A Very Happy Friday, Gang!

There is nothing to report today, except that it is Nick Cave’s birthday, today.

Happy, happy, happy!! It was 4 years ago, right around his birthday, that I last saw him in NYC.

Then there was this weird scamdemic thing that made almost everything on Earth feel like a bad dream.

However. That’s over.

Happy Birthday, Nick Cave! See ya real soon!!

Other than that, my new writing desk arrived!

It was simple to put together. It weighs almost nothing. The top is real wood. It is so basic and plain and compact — just what I was looking for in order to get back to journal writing, or to sit and make story notes, outlines, etc. — just to get away from the laptop for a little while each day.

The only “problem” is, Francis really loves sitting in the chair. She prefers it to the other chair in the dining room that is exactly like it; the one she used to love over all other chairs in the house for about the last 3 years…. so now I feel a little guilty because in order to sit at my new happy writing desk, I have to ask her to please move… (she’s not called “Mean Frannie McFee” for nothing.) Anyway:

All right!

Enjoy your Friday, wherever you are in the world!!

James Tabor announces a GREAT new course!

“This course has Ten Lectures, filmed in HiDef video. It comes with a hefty course pack of study notes and other resources–PDF readings, bonus videos, and lots more. I will also be doing monthly Zoom meetings with the students in this course beginning October 29th. These meetings are not Webinars, where you watch me talk, but a Zoom gathering of all who can “attend,” where we can talk, dialogue, address questions and issues, and continue to learn together.”

Tonight — Nick Cave is in Durham, NC. (Getting closer to Cleveland by the minute, gang.)

And that’s really it for today, gang.

Oh, but wait!! Here’s this!

Okay, and that’s it.

My driving-to-town music from yesterday! Enjoy!!

Just A Stunning Evening!

Yesterday ended just as gloriously as it started out, gang. Weather-wise! It was such a beautiful evening here in the Hinterlands.

I finally finished both the updated résumé and new bio for Sandra and got it off to her around 4PM. And finally had everything off my plate — for a little while, anyway.

And what a beautiful feeling.

During dinner last night, I watched a really cool episode of The Avengers, from 1964 (Honor Blackman as Mrs. Gale — the Emma Peele character was not in the series yet.) (Honor Blackman is also famous for having played “Pussy Galore” in the James Bond movie, Goldfinger, and “Honey West” on TV!)

As Pussy Galore, in James Bond
As private-eye, Honey West, on TV

And in 1964, my aunt bought me a Honey West doll for my birthday!!! I was absolutely thrilled!

***************

Anyway. I digress.

After dinner, I did yoga, took my shower, did one of the lessons in the online course I’m studying (again) on the Book of Genesis.

And then, at 9PM, when Phil’s livestream did not come on, I did something I’ve been wanting to do all summer!!

I sat out on my kitchen porch, with my Maine Coon cat, Kon Tiki of the Great Outdoors, and a visiting neighbor cat — that I call Ginger Boy. And I watched the sun go down, and watched all the fireflies blinking like crazy for as far as the eye could see. Listened to the birds singing, as they settled in for the night.

And, with nary a mosquito bothering me at all — I ate a Jonny Pop organic watermelon popsicle and just had the very best evening.

I had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO!!!! Nothing, zippo, zero, nada. Wow.

And when I went in for the night, I watched two more episodes of Yogi Bear from Season 4, followed by an utterly ridiculous episode of Huckleberry Hound!! And then I turned everything off and just listened to the night outside my open windows.

And here is a selfie from last evening — I could not believe how happy I looked, so I took a photo! (And FYI, I will be 63 in 11 days….)

Marilyn Jaye Lewis, 62 years and 354 days old!

If you are interested in reading an extremely condensed version of Sandra’s career — here is her new Bio. (For now! I’m guessing it’ll have to be tweaked a bit.)

Sandra Caldwell

Bio

“A true entertainer in every sense of the word…”  NY Times

“A black transgender woman of immense poise, beauty, and – pardon me, I can’t help it – charm…” Variety

“A provocative entertainer combined with powerful vocal skills, Sandra Caldwell has it all…”   Toronto Star

Sandra Caldwell is a celebrated African American trans actress, singer, and writer whose 45+ year career extends throughout the worlds of film, television, and theater.

Starting out as a jazz singer – her first love – she performed with top orchestras in some of the world’s finest venues, including the Montreal Jazz Festival, the Montreux Jazz Festival, the Newport Jazz Festival, and the White House Jazz on the Lawn series. In her early days, she was a fixture in the café society set in numerous nightspots across the country, also hosting the radio show, Sunday Afternoons with Sandra Caldwell on Jazz FM91 in Toronto.

On television, Sandra was seen in recurring roles in The Gilded Age, High Maintenance, The Book of Negroes, 19-2, Soul Food, and, as a series regular, in Little Men. She had guest-starring roles in such hit shows as Law & Order: SVU and Rookie Blue. Sandra was a featured performer in many TV movies, including Good Fences with Whoopie Goldberg, and Disney’s The Cheetah Girls.

Sandra’s film work includes the upcoming Jackie Shane and Milo & Millie, as well as memorable work in past films, such as Murder at 1600; Shall We Dance, and Maya Angelou’s directorial debut, Down in the Delta.

In theater, Sandra appeared in the musical Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story (Shubert Theater); the Original Workshop for Ragtime (Live Ent. Productions); the drama Coming Through Slaughter (Necessary Angel Theater, Toronto); and was nominated for a Dora Award, the Canadian Tony, for her work in Sophisticated Ladies (Sterling Productions, Toronto).

Notably, in 2017 in the NY Times, Sandra came out publicly as transgender while in rehearsals for her transgender leading role in the critically acclaimed “Charm” (MCC Theater).

Additionally, in 2020, she spoke candidly about transgender representation in the media, in the “enlightening and heartfelt” (- LA Times) Netflix documentary “Disclosure: Trans Lives on Screen”.

A bona fide heroine of today’s LGBTQ+ generation, Sandra’s long awaited self-penned, one-woman show, “The Guide to Being Fabulous”, is a jazz musical that tells the real story of Sandra Caldwell’s unparalleled life. From a young runaway, panhandling on the streets of DC, to the Moulin Rouge in Paris, to her role as Mama Morton in “Chicago” at the Stratford Festival (“4-Stars!” – Toronto Star), she has done it all and endured it all, without losing sight of her comedic timing, her turn of phrase, or her compassion.

Yes, an entertainer in every sense of the word; ladies and gentlemen, we give you…

Miss Sandra Caldwell

Dear Diary, What A Yucky Day!

Rainy, breezy, damp, cool.

Nothing says “summer” quite like that, huh, gang?

And I have the whole darn day off — no chores to do (unless I want to — God knows that with 9 cats currently in my house, there are always chores that I could do)…

My two furry visitors will be returning to their mom in just a few days. I will be so sad to see them go, but my house will be cleaner, that’s for sure. I’m not sure why 2 additional cats suddenly makes my house a mess, but it sure does.

Anyway. I will miss them. They are such sweet cats.

This just in from Johnny Depp on Instagram!! The Hollywood Vampires tour continues!

And speaking of smoking…

I came so close to pulling in to Waterbeds & Stuff yesterday, to see if they sell organic tobacco leaves (I believe they do). I didn’t stop, but what I did see in their parking lot was one car, and a really old guy (likely my age), getting out of that car — while quite a lot of cars were in the parking lot of the Vape Station across the street.

And I thought: It’s just we old people who even remember that Water Beds & Stuff exists… And I wondered if he was going in there to buy organic tobacco leaves…

Me, soon.

Anyway.

Work with Sandra was brief yesterday. We were mostly talking about how fucking insane the Pride stuff is now in NYC (and everywhere). Just garbage stuff and so in your face. You just have to cancel it out now.

I wonder how many Antifa folks were paid to go “be insane” in Pride parades across America…

But because we were talking more than working yesterday, tomorrow will be an intense work day for us instead. And of course, tomorrow, the weather will be stunning! When I won’t have time to go out and do some much-needed gardening that I was hoping to do today

(Oh, and tonight, at 7:30 PM eastern time, they will announce who won the Dora Awards up in Toronto. Our Director, Weyni Mengesha, is up for Outstanding Director of 2022.)

This article was in Uncover DC last evening. I really loved it — even though it’s reporting some bad news. Overall, it is an awesome story, gang:

Making Real Men: King Randall and The Life Preparatory School for Boys by Michelle Edwards (June 26, 20230

[…]During the first year of The Life Preparatory School for Boys, the school dealt with multiple setbacks, including individuals calling the fire department to shut them down and the city of Albany attempting to throw them out of their building. Yet, as with all things rooted in God—goodness and love prevailed. The school forged through the year with many boys, including a 13-year-old former gang member who had been shot, making the honor roll and, most likely for the first time, experiencing a life-changing sense of inner pride. […]

[…] Sharing that he feels sure the attack was coordinated, Randall said the school’s main logo on the school wall was destroyed, sinks were pulled loose from walls, and doors were ripped from hinges. The destruction apparent in the pictures shared on Twitter is unfathomable. Who would intentionally destroy a school making such a positive impact? Besides the sheer destruction to the facility and its contents, Randall remarked that given the nature of the items stolen, it is difficult to believe that the three individuals he caught acted alone. […]

[…] Immediately after Randall shared the news of the vandalism on Twitter, he shifted his focus back to the well-being of his boys, which is where it has stayed from day one. […]

And this is also awesome. It came by way of the Ohio local Connecting Consciousness Group —

In an unexpected move (!!) —

Nick Cave did a podcast with the Archbishop Justin Welby on the BBC over the weekend… You can listen HERE (28 mins).

And in an unrelated item…

Dr. Morse’s Herbal Health Club had another free webinar a few days ago, this time on the Digestive System. Here is the replay:

Insight into the Digestive System Function & Therapeutics (58 mins):

And even though I can’t talk about it, there was even MORE good news from James Tabor last night that has just got me so excited, gang.

However, it has also increased the amount of research papers I have to read by tenfold. Seriously. Just so much stuff. All of it amazing (to me, anyway. If you aren’t interested in archeology and the 1st Century Jesus Movement, then, obviously, you have a lot less reading to do…).

And here is the first episode in a new series by James Tabor–

Death & Afterlife: The Ancient Hebrew View (48 mins):

And if this is of any interest to you —

I am revisiting an online course I completed only recently, but it was so good, that I had to go over it again. It is 24 lessons on the book of Genesis. And Genesis is absolutely not all that you think it is, gang — and in many ways, it is so much more. (This is a scholarly look at Genesis, not a theological one.)

For instance —

In a related note — from Ross K. Nichols: What was the Forbidden Fruit? You Might Be Surprised (about 20 seconds):

My companion guide while I re-study the course on Genesis, is James Tabor’s amazingly handy The Book of Genesis: A New Translation from the Transparent English Bible — which is truly a “transparent” translation. It keeps as close to the original Hebrew text and spirit as possible.

And last night, in connection with re-visiting the first few chapters of Genesis, I listened to a very well read audiobook on LibriVox of Sir E.A. Wallis Budge’s scholarly account: The Babylonian Study of the Deluge as Told by Assyrian Tablets from Nineveh; and The Epic of Gilgamesh.

In it, you can compare the historical accounts of the much earlier flood with the story of Noah that is told in Genesis — among other things.

If you’d rather read an eBook of it online and see illustrations of the ancient tablets of Nineveh you can go here. (It does not include The Epic of Gilgamesh, though.)

Anyway, it was fascinating and it was great being able to just lie in bed and listen to it as the sun was going down and fireflies were emerging all over the evening that was outside my window — and not have to do a ton of academic-type reading…

And yes, for some reason, this is my beautiful life. I have no idea why.

Okay, today is dreary, yes. But this afternoon, I’ll be catching up with Val in Brooklyn over the phone, and I always love doing that. Sort of the high point of my week.

Have a terrific Tuesday, wherever you are in the world, okay??

I’m going to get back to work here on my erotic novella-in-progress Novitiate.

Thanks for visiting.

I love you guys See ya!

***************

The “soundtrack” for Novitiate continues!

Yes! It’s That Frisky Time of Year!!

When raccoon cubs who were born out back in your barn , come out during the night and finally help you re-decorate your kitchen porch!! Yay!!

When I opened my kitchen door at 6am this morning, to find my outside cats, Blackie and Kon Tiki of the Great Outdoors (it’s a long name but it really suits her), sitting patiently amid tipped over plant stands and flower pots, scattered food bowls and spilled water dishes, I said, “Oh my god!!”

And then the early happy morning in Crazeysburg commenced from there…

Yes! Onto other topics…

I am somehow up to my eyeballs again in rewrites today.

You probably think this is the longest play in history, but actually, the final version will only run 1 hour and 15 minutes, including songs, with no intermission. But that is part of the problem — trying to trim it way down without losing the actual storyline or any of the (great) songs.

But we’re getting there!!

Anyway, it is another really lovely day here, and I enjoy sitting at my desk when the world outside my many windows is so beautiful.

Plus, it’s “Old Home” week in Crazeysburg. It’s not really called that — but it’s the time of year when people who used to live here come home and have a reunion with the 14 people who still live here, and there is a carnival, and food stands, and live music.

It all happens one block from my house, and they close down 2nd Street, so all the “traffic” gets re-routed onto my street (1st Street). I use that word “traffic” lightly. At any given time of the day or night, there is usually maybe one car or pickup truck driving past my house. Usually, actually, there are none.

But this is the week, when 5 or 6 or sometimes 9 cars or pickup trucks might drive past at the same time. So it gets lively!! Especially in the evenings. Seriously, though, everyone in the village is in a really festive mood right now.

I love this photo from 1910. It is of our old Methodist church, which is still there — across the street from the new Methodist church. Someone bought it recently and turned it into a private home. but this building is also one block away from me. The village is 200 years old.

In much larger world news….

Apparently, the Hollywood Vampires play Romania tomorrow and, according to Instagram, the guys are already there, lurking about!!

It looks like there are still tickets available. I’m not entirely sure about that because I don’t speak Romanian. But you can check here for tickets.

And according to the seating chart, section C, the cheap seats, is for Drunk Friends (!!):

“Drunk Friends (C) Fără loc, în spatele categoriilor Heroes si Boogiemen”

Rest assured, though, there are also VIP seats, if your reputation is important to you.

And if you do live in Romania but do not know who the Hollywood Vampires are, they are:

“Supergrupul din care fac parte Alice CooperJohnny DeppJoe Perry (Aerosmith) si Tommy Henriksen”

Okay.

From James Tabor yesterday– “In this archive interview footage from November 1991 I talk about three Dead Sea Scroll texts–two of them newly released at that time, all of which relate to the idea of a suffering Messiah figure who is then connected to the idea of resurrection of the dead.”

Dateline November 1991: Our First Look at the Unpublished Dead Sea Scrolls (30 mins):

And if you’ve been following Ross K. Nichols’ series on the Book of Jeremiah — “Dive into our standalone season finale of ‘The World and Words of the Prophet Jeremiah’ as we undertake an intricate journey of disentanglement and reordering. This episode seeks to reveal the internal chronology of the book of Jeremiah, a task that scholars have puzzled over for centuries due to the apparent lack of chronological arrangement.”

Chronological Clarity (Audio) – The World and Words of the Prophet Jeremiah (52 mins):

And there is also this! For no reason whatsoever!! A photo of Nick Cave from a trillion years ago (not quite as old as the book of Jeremiah). But I just love it:

All righty.

I must get started around here. I hope you have a wonderful Wednesday, wherever you are in the world!

Thanks for visiting.

I love you guys. See ya!!
