A Happy Tuesday in the Hinterlands!

Okay, not only is the weather gorgeous AGAIN, but the chores are already done and I have the entire day free to sit at my desk and work on the novel! (And ditto for Thursday — the Agency already texted at 5:30AM this morning and asked if I could work an 8-hour shift on Thursday, but I passed. I wanted another entire day here to make more headway in completing the novel.)

Yay!

And even though I keep having my doubts that the publisher will ever be able to get distribution for this utterly intense, boundary-pushing, beyond-politically-incorrect novel once it’s completed, here’s this:

And there’s also this —

One of those guys whose spirit keeps me writing:

I hung out on MacDougal Street a lot (and that’s putting it mildly) when I was a folk singer/songwriter in NYC, back in the 1980s. The San Remo Cafe was already closed by then. But the spirit of all those amazing writers, painters, artists of all sorts, were all over that street. It was an incredible time, even in the 1980s.

And here’s this, just because I saw the photo on Instagram this morning, and they, too, are on MacDougal Street and have been there forever:

Cafe Wha? and Minetta Tavern.

If you check all the links above, you will likely be astounded by the history & the talent that hung out at all three of those places over the decades. The vibe on that street was like nothing else I’d ever felt.

And here’s something–

Dennis sent me the link to this video the other night. I had sort of forgotten about it — a song I wrote for Hank Williams (and other Country singers like him) a long time ago. It kind of fits the atmosphere above.

(This is a demo, just me and my guitar in my room, 1992.)

LONG GONE TRAIN

There are men who were doomed to the legend
Of their own despair
Who linger like an echoed moaning
On a cold black air
They were lean high-rollers in the shadow
Of a ball and chain
Who were beckoned to their call to glory
From a long gone train.

Men who had railed at the virtue of their own reward
Who smothered in the lonesome comfort
Of a long black Ford
And the Sheriff who was called to the scene
In a driving rain
Sent the body home on the rails
Of a long gone train.

CHORUS:
Cold as the steal rail line that delivered him to fame
Beaten by the hustler’s dream that had robbed his name
Driven by the fury in a heart that was real as rain
It all disappears in the slow procession
Of a long gone train.

Men who concealed their condition
From the broad daylight
Who would rage it wild and reckless
At the cruel limelight
And while the sane bystanders at the apron of the stage complained
How they wept at the mournful passing
Of a long gone train.

REPEAT CHORUS

There are men who will rail at the virtue of their own reward
Who will smother in the lonesome comfort of a long black Ford
And the Sheriff who is called to the scene in a driving rain
Will send the body home on the rails
Of a long gone train.

REPEAT CHORUS

Before I forget, from yesterday afternoon — I guess we have another week of intense psyops ahead:

From il donaldo trumpo:

GONNA NEED MORE POPCORN THIS WEEK!!!🍿🍿🍿

And Phil is supposed to be live again tonight, this time at 7PM eastern time. Check later to confirm. UPDATE: It will be tomorrow night, same time.

************

Okay, so yesterday was incredible!

Steve and I met for lunch at the Three Tigers Brewing Co in Granville. And even though we reminisced a little bit about our mutual friend Kent, we mostly talked about Steve’s utter exhaustion.

He got married late in life to a much younger woman and now, at the lofty age of 65, he is the father of four children, between the ages of 4 and 17 (!!). And they absolutely wear him out!!

But we had a great time, even though that other guy I mentioned recently, who is one of my favorite people on Earth and who was allegedly the chef there, no longer works there. Ah well. Perhaps I’ll run into him again somewhere in Granville when I least expect it.

However–

Remember that young guy I wrote about recently, who was working a register at the Rural King and who blew me away with his “Wild Thing-ness”, even though I am old enough to be his grandmother??

He was working a register at the Rural King again yesterday. And he still blew me away with his Wild Thing-ness! But the difference was that he was actually flirting with me yesterday. Even though I am old enough to be his grandmother.

I am pretty sure it was because I was wearing that Bowie T-shirt Wayne made for me a few years ago. I was getting checked out by guys everywhere yesterday, of all ages, and even by a few short-haired young women who, I’m guessing, don’t identify too vigorously as “female”.

Anyway. Wow!! What a great day!! I texted Wayne later and, once again, thanked him profusely for sending me that T-shirt! (He designed it for me, for my birthday about 6 years ago.)

And here’s me wearing it in Rhinebeck, NY, 6 years ago (when I was already old enough to be everybody’s grandmother!):

*********

Speaking of Rhinebeck, NY — Sandra has already had her meeting with the director of our staged reading for “The Guide to Being Fabulous” in NYC. She’s going to give me the update on Thursday. I cannot wait!! And at that point, I can probably post more details publicly on the blog! We shall see!

***********

My first husband, Chong Foun Kee, who lives in Seattle, texted me yesterday to alert me that Barbara Eden has turned 94 !!

Barbara Eden in “I Dream of Jeannie” in the 1960s.One of my favorite TV shows back then!!

This is why it is imperative that you marry someone your own age, gang, even if it ends in divorce! And even if they come from far-flung lands like Singapore, chances are they can still share your important childhood cultural events and then alert you to these important updates decades later!!

*************

This was GREAT!

From James Tabor–

The Fading of the Jesus Family: Phase Two (37 mins):

*************

This was also incredible. I watched it about 5 or 6 times, because it goes by really quick. A 2-minute tik-tok video about the truth of the Vietnam War.

From General Flynn’s telegram page the other day:

“She’s not CRAZY and she most definitely is NOT a CONSPIRACY THEORIST! The truth hurts but it has to be stated.”

And also — keep this is mind:

Rear Admiral George S. Morrison commanded the U.S. naval forces in the Gulf of Tonkin during the August 1964 incident — he was Jim Morrison’s father.

Jim Morrison was allegedly murdered by his CIA handler, after years of being MK Ultra’d by them (LSD, etc).

Also, the CIA assassinated Ngô Đình Diệm in 1963 — a mere 21 days before they took out JFK for being anti-CIA and for not wanting the USA to get involved in Vietnam….

Hmmmm…..

*************

All righty!!

On that cheery note! Let’s move on…

Nick Cave sent out the official announcement for the upcoming tour of Australia and New Zealand!

“Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds will bring their acclaimed WILD GOD TOUR to Australia and New Zealand in January and February 2026, their first shows in the region since 2017.

“These unmissable events will be held in outdoor settings in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane, with indoor shows in Adelaide and Wellington, New Zealand.

“Tickets are on sale Friday 29 August at 10am local time from nickcave.com”

Tour dates are HERE.

**********

And then here’s this!

As we wait for Baden-Baden, Germany!

Nick Cave, a few decades ago, wondering what you’re looking at….

*************

And I think that is it for today!!

I’m gonna get started here on The Curse of Our Profound Disorder!!

Have a terrific Tuesday, wherever you are in the world!!

Thanks for visiting.

I love you guys. See ya!

***************

Breakfast-listening-music!!

We are still on a Monkees kick around here, but we’ve moved on to their hugely popular second album, More of The Monkees!!

A fantastic song, written by Michael Nesmith, who was a member of The Monkees. “Mary, Mary” 1967. Enjoy, gang!!!!

“Mary, Mary”

Mary, Mary, where you goin’ to?
Mary, Mary, can I go too.
This one thing I will vow ya,
I’d rather die than to live without ya.
Mary, Mary, where you goin’ to?

Mary, Mary, tell me truly
What did I do to make you leave me.
Whatever it was I didn’t mean to,
You know I never would try and hurt ya.
Mary, Mary, where you goin’ to?

What more, Mary, can I do
To prove my love is truly yours?
I’ve done more now than a clear-thinkin’ man would do.

Mary, Mary, it’s not over.
Where you go, I will follow.
‘Til I win your love again
And walk beside you,
But until then.
Mary, Mary, where you goin’ to?

Mary, Mary, where you goin’ to?
Mary, where you goin’ to?
Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary, where you goin’ to?

c – 1967 Michael Nesmith

Sunday and All is Well in the Hinterlands!

Wow, another gorgeous morning!

And look what happened yesterday, as I was leaving for town. The lawncare guy and his friends got started a day early. (See yesterday’s post.)

I don’t have a before photo, but here are a few photos he took during and after. They did a fantastic job. However, the asphalt underneath was just too ruined to be worth saving, so I’m not sure what my neighbor and I will do about the basketball hoop. But I’m thrilled to have all those weeds and the dead tree GONE. After 7 years.

***********

And I did get to chat briefly with Wayne after I got home from my shift yesterday. He absolutely LOVED Cambodia. He’d been there before, briefly, but this trip was just a great one. And he loves the people there. He said they are warm and kind and very, very sweet.

A total success.

Wayne and some new friends in Cambodia, back in July

Each summer, for the past 5 years or so, Wayne has flown to the Far East for his summer vacations. I cannot even imagine being in a plane that long anymore.

Loyal readers of this lofty blog — those who have been with me since the 5G War, when I was considered a “Domestic Terrorist” and so refused to fly anywhere, let alone even leave town in my car — know that I am only recently getting back to being okay about flying. (When I wasn’t arrested in Toronto, I finally let myself breathe and knew for sure the war was over.)

But I really only have an interest in going to NYC these days. Overseas, even back to Europe, I just don’t know, gang.

Perhaps you recall that the last time I flew to Paris (for a book signing), I left Paris rather suddenly, changing my plans at the last minute, and I flew into the Exeter airport in Devon, instead of to London. And I was held there in that little airport in Exeter by Customs for “questioning.”

It was extremely uncomfortable. I knew exactly what the Customs guys were looking at on their computer screens — my FBI record.

THEM: “What were you doing in Paris?”

ME: “I had a book signing.”

THEM: “Exactly what kind of writer are you?”

I played dumb and picked a harmless story and stuck to it — “I just write romances, nothing important.”

And I stuck to it and stuck to it and stuck to it because they kept asking me that same question over and over and over….

THEM (finally asking a new question): “What are you planning to do while you’re here?”

ME (just prior to receiving my Oscar nomination): “Just visiting some friends.”

I left out the part about the friends being war exiles from Dubrovnik and ex-pat Australian journalists wanted for questioning in Beirut, Lebanon…

And as soon as they let me go and I got to Bristol, said friends/colleagues assured me I’d be followed on those CCTV cameras everywhere I went…

Yes, being a world-renowned pornographer erotica writer/editor/publisher/producer has had its heady perks!

Anyway. I’m still not thrilled with the idea of going through Customs if I don’t absolutely have to for (what’s left of) the “career.”

But one happy thing Wayne said yesterday is that as soon as I finish the draft of The Curse of Our Profound Disorder, he wants to read it!!

So, that is really cool!! It gives me that impetus to complete the novel before I’m 91 years old…

**********

Before I forget–

Phil continued his PHAPP Q & A on his telegram page yesterday. Click this LINK and then scroll and scroll and scroll!

***********

I had such a great time with my favorite now-95-year-old Japanese man yesterday.

I had brought him a birthday card that he seemed to absolutely LOVE, gang. It kind of astounded me. He kept re-reading it all afternoon, he held it to his heart several times. He even kissed it a few times. And, occasionally, he would look at the card, look at me, and say: “You’re Marilyn, right? You gave me this card? Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

It really was kind of incredible.

And today, is officially his birthday.

And in the endless series of coincidences revolving around him and me — I realized that today is the anniversary of the death of a man who was a very close friend of my family’s — an artist, from back in Cleveland, he meant the world to me. He would have been 92 now, had he lived.

If you’re keeping track of the tons of coincidences– my dad and the Japanese man were born 4 weeks apart, in 1930; separated by 500 miles, vastly different cultures, and ultimately, the Second World War. But in the 1960s, they attended the same annual electronics convention in Chicago. The Japanese man’s 2nd wife (a war exile from Latvia — my adoptive maternal grandparents, in Cleveland, were also exiles from Latvia), died on the same day that my dad died, but in different years. And the Japanese man’s dad, my dad, and I all had birthdays close together (very different years! 1870, 1930, and 1960).

And now it turns out that one of the most profound father-figures from my childhood died on my favorite Japanese man’s birthday.

It’s too weird, gang. I’m guessing some day I’ll write about it, if only to try to figure it all out.

**********

There were some beautiful photos of the Macedonia concert from Friday night on Instagram this morning. Same photographer, Stefan Rajhi, took all the photos, but I’ll only post a few of them here:

The tour continues in 2 weeks, in Germany. But tickets are sold out.

And while we wait… here’s this. Another one of my favorite photos ever. Nick with his son Luke:

And here’s this — the “lullaby” Nick wrote in 1991, after the birth of Luke, while living in Brazil during very turbulent political times:

****************

And I think I’m going to close this now and enjoy what’s left of this gorgeous morning before heading out later to see the retired Minister and his lovely wife!

Have a beautiful Sunday, wherever you are in the world!!

Thanks for visiting.

I love you guys. See ya!

Driving-to-town music from yesterday!!

Everyone’s gone now, right? All of the NY Dolls are gone now. Jim Carroll’s gone. Lou Reed. Mink DeVille. David Bowie. Marc Bolan.

I miss all of these guys but, wow, such great memories remain….

Anyway, I still rejoice when this song comes on my driving-to-town playlist!! From those incredible days when I worked at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC —

David Johansen aka “Buster Poindexter” — “Hot Hot Hot” 1987. Rejoice and enjoy, gang!!

A new day begins in the Hinterlands!

It’s cloudy again today, but I am totally digging the 65 degrees Fahrenheit! Everything is always easier when there’s a cool breeze.

I picked up another shift today with that really nice woman who lives out in Granville — who lives in that stunning home, surrounded by that incredible landscaping. (That house where I needed a map to find the bathroom last time I was there!) (Oh, and it actually turned out that I know the owners of the house — the woman’s daughter and son-in-law. Truly nice people. They take such good care of her.)

They live in the hills behind the Bryn du Mansion. If you’re ever in Granville, the mansion is easy to spot from the road…

It’s a long shift, but I don’t have to leave for a few more hours so I’ll actually have time to work on the novel today, too.

Yesterday was nice because it sort of began the “Happy 95th Birthday” wishes for my favorite nearly-95-year-old Japanese man. He got a beautiful birthday card in the mail from a son & daughter-in-law in South Carolina; one of his daughter’s called from Seattle; another son & daughter-in-law from Florida will be in town beginning today and will be stopping in to see him later; and then a nephew he hasn’t seen in years is coming to town from NY on Monday.

It made me feel really good to see him so happy. The son & daughter-in-law from Florida are taking him out to dinner on Saturday, so I decided that tomorrow, he and I will go out to lunch to celebrate — sashimi & sake — instead of on Saturday.

He doesn’t really remember that it’s his birthday, but as each little thing pops up, it makes him really happy. He loves hearing from people. Except for when a caregiver is there with him, he is completely alone in the house, as well as in the entire State of Ohio…

And this is cool!

This is an example of the wooden toy his father used to make — & sell — when he had a stall on the Boardwalk in Ocean City, NJ, back in the early 1930s! A black & white bulldog. He made them by hand. We’re not positive, but this could be one of the actual ones his father made. (We found it online — listed as “Folk Art from the 1930s.”)

************

This is also a cool thing! I ordered one today.

From Ross K. Nichols:

“The Ten Words – Shapira Fragments Poster

“This elegant poster presents The Ten Words as they are preserved in the mysterious Shapira Fragments. Long dismissed, but in the post-Qumran era increasingly regarded by many as ancient and authentic…”

It comes in 3 sizes, plus shipping. You can read about it and order it HERE.

(FYI — The “Ten Words” are also known as the Ten Commandments, but the Shapira Fragments are considered the earliest known form of Moses’ words.)

**************

On a similar note — well, not really, however–

The other day, I began yet another new online course and I am just loving it:

“The History of Christianity in the Reformation Era”.

It focuses on the upheavals of Christianity in Europe in the late 15th to mid 16th Centuries. 36 lectures total, really in depth stuff. From Protestantism, to Radical Protestantism, to Anabaptism, and the transformation of Roman Catholicism.

(It’s on a phone app I use so there isn’t a link to it that I can post here.)

“Ch-ch-ch- CHANGES…”

**************

Okay. Not on a similar note…

Phil is supposed to do another livestream tonight at 9PM eastern time, check here later to confirm.

****************

Nick Cave sent out another Red Hand File this morning, wherein he announced, a week early, that he and the Bad Seeds will be doing a Wild God tour of Australia and New Zealand in January!!

He also revealed that he is taking a brief vacation from the Red Hand Files, so I will attempt to not go through any sort of post-partem depression. We shall see how that goes!!

Meanwhile you can read today’s Red Hand File here.

And from last night in Bulgaria!! (And FYI — you can still get tickets here for the show in Macedonia tomorrow!! That is the final show of the tour that has tickets available.)

And in the event we DO get any sort of post-partem depression, here’s this:

Nick Cave, Berlin 1986 — and, appropriately, quite blue:

*************

And before I toddle off to get to work on The Curse of Our Profound Disorder!!

I rediscovered this gem on Amazon Prime:

My god, I used to love this show!! But I cannot believe it is over 30 years ago, already!! WTF??!! I must say it again: Where did the fucking time go??!!

This is from back in the days when I lived in NYC, on the Upper West Side with Wayne. And my best friend on Earth was still alive — Paul Martin, who died in 1999. We both used to just love this show. And watching these re-runs now, I can easily recall WHY. It is so fucking funny. (I watch it in bed now, after various phone calls, right before going to sleep — and I feel like Paul is right there with me.)

************

And that is it for today!! Time for more coffee and some writing, re-writing, and RE-re-writing!

Enjoy your Thursday, wherever you are in the world!

Thanks for visiting.

I love you guys. See ya!

**********

I leave you with this!

Yes, still on a Monkees kick around here! This one is usually going over and over in my head when I am waking up at 4AM.

It was one of those pop gems written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin. (Some day, I will regale you with the Carole King story from my wee bonny girlhood!! It includes the first bar mitzvah I attended when I was 11, the first boy I ever slow danced with, and a phone call from Carole King herself!!)

Okay!!

“Take A Giant Step”, 1966. The Monkees. Enjoy, gang.

“Take A Giant Step”

Though you’ve played at love and lost
And sorrow’s turned your heart to frost
I will melt your heart again.
Remember the feeling as a child
When you woke up and morning smiled
It’s time you felt like you did then.
There’s just no percentage in remembering the past
It’s time you learned to live again at last.

Come with me, leave yesterday behind
And take a giant step outside your mind.

You stare at me in disbelief
You say for you there’s no relieve
But I swear I’ll prove you wrong.
Don’t stay in your lonely room
Just staring back in silent gloom.
That’s not where you belong
Come with me I’ll take you where the taste of life is green
And everyday holds wonders to be seen.

Come with me, leave yesterday behind
And take a giant step outside your mind.

c – 1966- Gerry Goffin, Carole King

Happy Thursday, One & All!

Yes!!

This afternoon, is our lunch date at the pizzeria in Granville!!

And to refresh your memory — it was voted MOST ROMANTIC LOOKING PIZZERIA IN THE WORLD back in 2023:

But the food there is fantastic, gang.

All ingredients are locally grown by farmers out here in the Hinterlands. And the recipes are sort of “nouvelle cuisine” but applied to pizza and pasta.

Dennis and I are both very excited! In fact, we talked on the phone for 3 hours last night, all about how excited we are! (And other stuff…)

Me, later, wearing another sundress a slice of pizza…

*************

Oh, and here’s something that doesn’t happen often, OOPS! I mean, EVER, in my world these days–

American Express wrote this morning to tell me:

THEM: “We’ve increased your credit limit!”

ME: “Fucking A!!! Are you serious??”

So that was really cool. I guess this means the fucking fake lockdown that completely wiped me out financially is officially over…

Yay.

************

Okay.

So, yesterday, my favorite nearly-95-year-old Japanese client and I went to Peony Bistro for sashimi (and sake), and this happened:

You know how he refuses to read his fortune cookies, or claim them in any way whatsoever because he says he doesn’t need any more fortune, he’s already got enough?

Well, yesterday, for some inexplicable reason, he decided to read his fortune and it was just incredible, gang. He read it and said: “This one is true — it’s you.” And he handed it to me.

Wow. It kinda broke my wee bonny heart!

*************

And in other good news!

Some “sort of” decent photos were posted on Instagram from night #2 of Nick Cave’s show in Latvia last night!!

And here’s the setlist from night #1. Check out that incredible encore! The encore alone would be worth the price of the ticket:

Okay. Next up is Bulgaria, next week, but both nights are SOLD OUT.

******************

All righty!

You know, Dennis has listened to all of my old music demos on my YouTube channel, and he has been just incredibly flattering about that part of my long-ago career…

But the time is gonna come soon when he will need to start checking out some of my fiction. (Perhaps not ALL of it, since no one really needs to be exposed to ALL of it, do they??)

He was going to start with some of my stuff that’s available in eBook editions, but I offered to lend him print copies of my books from my own collection since they are easier to read when you’re out back on your porch and the sun is going down…

But which title to give him for his first exposure to my often unbridled and excessive brain?

Here is the short list. Please feel free to VOTE and vote often!!

  1. Neptune & Surf — my first book! It put me on the map across the globe! Won awards. Made me famous. Still in print 26 years later! But is exceedingly hardcore and exceptionally graphic.

2. 1954 Powder Blue Pickup — short. Easy to read. To the point. But is extremely hardcore. Plus, he owns a pickup truck and while it isn’t blue or from 1954, it could still fill him with many, many seemingly questionable ideas!!!

3. Freak Parade — another award winner! Very popular with critics! A lot about the music scene in NYC in the late 90s. But it is also exceedingly graphic and also kinda way too close to my actual LIFE back then… and way too much about NYC.

4. The Curse Of Our Profound Disorder — novel-in-progress, but almost complete! He could be the first person to read it, outside of the publishers! Not too sexually graphic but nonetheless graphic, a tad bit brutal, very raw, a bit relentless. The kind of book that, as you sit on your porch in the fading sunlight of the glorious Hinterlands, could make you say out loud; “Jesus Christ. Who the fuck IS this woman??”

(no image available yet)

I guess we shall see, gang!! I will keep you posted…

**************

Meanwhile, I suppose I will close this now and get some stuff done before I head out to the pizzeria!

[curious typo above…I wonder how they missed it?]

Anyway!

Enjoy your Thursday, wherever you are in the world!

Thanks for visiting!

I love you guys. See ya!

****************

I leave you with this!

Morning listening music!!!

I absolutely loved Sha Na Na when I was a wee bonny lass and I loved their version of this song!! And I still loved it this morning, all these decades later. I sang along at the top of my no-longer-wee bonny voice!!

“Yakety Yak”, Sha Na Na, 1973. Enjoy, gang.

"Yakety Yak"

Take out the papers and the trash
Or you don't get no spendin' cash
If you don't scrub that kitchen floor
You ain't gonna rock and roll no more
Yakety yak (Don't talk back)

Just finish cleanin' up your room
Let's see that dust fly with that broom
Get all that garbage out of sight
Or you don't go out Friday night
Yakety yak (Don't talk back)

You just put on your coat and hat
And walk yourself to the laundromat
And when you finish doin' that
Bring in the dog and put out the cat
Yakety yak (Don't talk back)

Don't you give me no dirty looks
Your father's hip, he knows what cooks
Just tell your hoodlum friend outside
You ain't got time to take a ride
Yakety yak (Don't talk back)

Yakety yak, yakety yak
Yakety yak, yakety yak
Yakety yak, yakety yak
Yakety yak, yakety yak

Happy Days!

Yes, gang, another incredibly beautiful morning here in the Hinterlands!

Really mild temperatures with a light breeze. Really sunny. Blue sky.

And today, my shift doesn’t start until early afternoon, so I was able to take my time getting out of bed, getting all the cats fed, getting my own breakfast, and — YES! — going back to bed with my:

The client I have this afternoon/evening is a new one. Well, I filled in for another caregiver this past Friday evening and met the client for the first time then.

I am really glad to be asked back. She was wonderful! We got along just great.

And what a beautiful home!! A rambling split-level. Just huge. You need a map to find your way to the bathroom and back. And a breathtaking property — really beautiful landscaping. It’s on the edge of a steep hill, with tons of trees and a splendid view of Granville.

She’s close to 90 now so she’s outlived most of her siblings, but she was one in a family of 9 children. And judging by all the many photos in her home, it was a really close and happy family. The vibe in her home is just so full of joy.

So I’m happy to have another shift with her and I hope she becomes a steady client for me. We’ll see. (It’s summer, so I’m probably just filling in for caregivers who are on vacation.)

*******************

Okay!

So guess who finally started reading my blog?? Yesterday.

And guess who asked to not be called the “eHarmony guy” anymore??

Because his name is Dennis.

So now he will be called Dennis!

But I still want to be mindful of stuff I post here to the blog, gang.

And NO! Not because Dennis is going to closely monitor every single solitary thing I say about him….

Or will he??? Hmmm…. This arrived yesterday, too:

That said, though!!

We had another great 3-hour phone chat last night.

And we are both really looking forward to our next lunch date — this Saturday afternoon, at the Peony Bistro!

AND — yesterday, when I went to the Peony Bistro with my favorite almost-95-year-old Japanese client, THIS was my fortune in the fortune cookie!!

So how happy is that??

**************

Okay!

It looks like folks in Bergen, Norway do not believe in taking photos with their phones when they are out at concerts!! Which is a great thing, if you ask me!

However.

There was almost nothing to choose from on Instagram from last night — at least, not yet. There are still 2 more shows.

There was one brief video uploaded, where Nick’s voice was just magnificent! But there were almost no photos at all.

SO here’s this!

From Nick Cave’s solo show in Bergen last night, with Colin Greenwood on bass! (And, yes, if you enlarge it, you will see that they are actually on the stage!)

************

And I think that’s it for now, gang. I want to get some stuff done around here today before heading to town.

Have a great Thursday, wherever you are in the world!

Thanks for visiting.

I love you guys. See ya!

************

I leave you with this!

Watch out! It’s another Johnny Cash classic!!

1963, “Ring of Fire”!! Enjoy, gang!

Happy Monday, One & All!

Okay!

I just got back from the post office, where I mailed off my 50-page (!!) home improvement loan application to the USDA RD!!

Now all I gotta do is WAIT.

But, however it plays out, I just feel really great that I got that done. And for your viewing pleasure!! Here’s an idea of what my basement stairs currently look like. (Keep in mind the house is 126 years old and those stairs are ancient!!)

The 2 bottom steps have already broken through. This is why I always put off to the absolute very last possible minute, going down there each fall & winter to change out the furnace filter:

Stairs to my basement, AKA Spider Heaven.

Even if they don’t approve my loan for some reason, I’m still going to somehow get those stairs fixed.

****************

Okay!

Wow. Another great day here in the Hinterlands.

And I slept in again because — YES! — I was chatting on the phone last night with my new friend for about 2 and a half hours — even after I’d worked a double. So it was kind of late (for me) when I finally managed to say: “Okay. Sweet Dreams, goodnight.”

But what a great time we always have on the phone!!

And he sent me the BEST photo! But he made me absolutely swear I would not post it anywhere on social media. But, wow, I loved it!!

It’s his Senior picture from when he graduated high school (in Columbus, 1976, I think.). He looks like such an angel. Omg. It’s too cute.

When you see him nowadays, “angel” probably wouldn’t be the first word that would pop into your head. He’s been around a little since that photo was taken. But in his soul, he is so kind, and considerate, and sweet, and he loves to laugh.

But he’s also a walking testament to the 2nd Amendment (concealed carry), so you probably wouldn’t want to “go ahead and make his day”…

And tomorrow we have our second lunch date, and I can’t wait.

***************

Okay.

So I heard from Sandra. She and her husband took an impromptu vacation over the weekend. So the files I need for the play updates probably won’t get here until later today. Which means — yes! — I get to work on the novel today. Yay! Finally.

**************

Okay!

Here’s another photo I fucking loved! For different reasons. From Instagram yesterday.

And we still have to wait 2 more days until Nick Cave and Colin Greenwood take the stage in Norway! For 3 consecutive sold out shows.

Nick Cave, waiting for something on the couch (possibly an ashtray but I’m not completely certain), about 30 years ago…

***********

If you follow Phil, he is planning to be live tonight at 8PM eastern. Check here later to confirm. (I sure hope he does because so much amazing stuff is going on out there right now and I would love it if he could finally confirm it! We’ll see.)

************

I think that’s actually it for now.

Enjoy your Monday, wherever you are in the world.

Thanks for visiting.

I love you guys. See ya!

I leave you with this!

I’ve posted it here before, but here it is again, for your listening pleasure!

Dennis Edwards, w/Seidah Garrett, “Don’t Look Any Further”, 1984. Enjoy, gang!!!!

“Don’t Look Any Further”
(feat. Siedah Garrett)

Someone to count on in a world ever changing
Here I am, stop where you standing
What you need is a lover, a man to take over
Oh, girl, don’t look any further
Strange when you think of the chances
That we’ve both been in a state of mind
Too cool to be careless, looking for the right thing
Oh baby, don’t look any further

(Tonight) Tonight we’re gonna taste a little paradise
(Rocking all night long) Rocking all night long
(Daylight) Daylight, I’ll still be looking in your ebony eyes
And we’ll go on and on and on (Go on and on and on)

Day o umba day o mambu ji ay o yeah
Don’t look any further (Don’t you look no further)
Day o umba day o nam bu ji ay o yeah
Don’t look any further

Someone to count on (Someone to count on)
In a world ever changing (Mmm-hmm…)
Here I am, stop where you standing, baby
What you need is a lover (You need a lover)
To love you all over (Love you all over)
Oh baby, don’t you look any further, further

Don’t look any further
Don’t look any further

(Tonight) Tonight we’re gonna taste a little paradise
(Rock you all night long) Won’t you rock me all night long
(Daylight) Daylight, I’ll still be looking in your ebony eyes
And we’ll go on and on and on and on

Day o umba day o mambu ji ay o
Don’t look any further, don’t you look no further
Day o umba day o na jam bay um bay o yeah
Don’t look any further
Day o umba day o mambu ji ay o
Don’t look any further, don’t you look no further(further)
Day o umba day o na jam bay um bay o
Don’t look any further, further
Day o umba day o mambu ji ay o
Don’t look any further, don’t you look no further
Day o umba day o na jam bay um bay o yaeh
Don’t look any further

“Oh what a beautiful day!”

Really kind of unbelievable, how beautiful the morning is around here. (Oh, and if you’re curious, and if you know the lyrics to the song “Oh What a Beautiful Morning” — the corn is indeed as high as an elephant’s eye here in Crazeysburg!) (Our town is pretty much surrounded by cornfields.)

Okay.

A beautiful day.

And I have the whole day off — and Sandra still hasn’t sent me the files I need to get back to work on the play. That’s frustrating, of course, but also — it means I don’t have anything else that I actually have to DO!!

Yay!

On a sadder note–

The legendary accordionist, Flaco Jiménez, has passed away. He played with many, many Country and Tejano musicians over the decades and had his own solo career, too, but I will always remember him best as part of the equally legendary Texas Tornados!

Wow, what a great band they were!! Wayne and I saw them play live in a small club in NYC, over 30 years ago. What a great memory. And then we played their CDs in the car constantly, on our road trip across the country on our honeymoon.

Here’s one of my favorite songs of theirs that heavily features Flaco– “Is Anybody Goin’ to San Antone?” 1991. RIP, Flaco.

************

On a similar note–

On this day in 1997, one of my all-time favorite writers and inspirations also passed away.

Realizing that this morning, caused me to sort of drop everything and dig out all his old paperbacks that have followed me through every apartment and every house for the last 40 years.

So here’s this! I bought this paperback (new) in NYC, back in 1983! I remember reading this on the subway, and in my hellhole apartment on E. 12th Street, like it was yesterday:

************

Okay.

I loved this! From Charlie Ward’s newsletter this morning:

“A groundbreaking new study has revealed that the human brain emits a faint glow—known as ultra-weak photon emission (UPE)—that may be closely tied to our mental state, and possibly even to deeper bioenergetic phenomena like vibration and frequency.

Researchers from Algoma University and Tufts University placed participants in total darkness and used photon detectors and EEG to measure the brain’s natural light. The occipital region, responsible for vision, glowed most during eyes-closed states, with photon activity fluctuating in tandem with neural rhythms, particularly in low-frequency brain waves.

Though invisible to the eye, these light emissions suggest the brain is radiating energy that could reflect its internal processes. This energy pulse—waxing and waning at sub-hertz frequencies—has drawn attention for its possible links to vibrational medicine, frequency-based healing, and even auras, which some traditions describe as subtle light fields around living beings….”

Another great video from James Tabor–

“…the thousands of followers of Jesus who fled across the Jordan from Jerusalem, just north of the Dead Sea, in the year 66 CE, to escape into the Decapolis area south of Pella. James the Just, eldest surviving brother of Jesus had been brutally murdered in 63 CE by Annas, son of Annas, of the Mafia High Priesthood that also had instigated the murder of Jesus. Simon his brother took over the leadership of the movement. This flight is mentioned in Mark 13:14-20 and Revelation 12:13-17, and reported by Eusebius, Church History Ecclesiastical History (Book 3. 5.3) and Epiphanius, Panarion (29.7.7–8 and 30.2.7). They settled in the general region of Beroea near Coele-Syria and in the Decapolis near Pella, and remained there into the 2nd and 3rd centuries, and scattered south as far as Arabia over the next few centuries. Remnants of the group, including Simon and other Desposuynai, or members of the extended Jesus family, returned to Jerusalem around 73 CE and rebuilt the “Synagogue of the Apostles” on Mt Zion, as Bargil Pixner has documented….”

On the Home Improvement front–

All the quotes are in from the various contractors, and now all I need to do is print everything out and then mail it to my local USDA RD office , and then wait and see!!

These specific loans are incredible, gang, because they are only available to people over age 62, with low incomes, who live in certain rural areas. The interest rates on the 20-year loans are close to zero.

My currently 126-year-old home, about 6 years ago, when my beloved maple tree still existed:

**************

Okay.

Yes! On the eHarmony front!

It seems like we have our first “song”! (As in “they’re playing our song”!!)

We both realized the song completely captures what’s going on with us and it left us both a little dumbfounded.

“Hello Sunshine”. 2019, Bruce Springsteen. We have both been playing it like crazy since yesterday:

“Hello Sunshine”

Had enough of heartbreak and pain
I had a little sweet spot for the rain
For the rain and skies of grey
Hello sunshine, won’t you stay?

You know I always liked my walking shoes
But you can get a little too fond of the blues
You walk too far, you walk away
Hello sunshine, won’t you stay?

You know I always loved a lonely town
Those empty streets, no one around
You fall in love with lonely, you end up that way
Hello sunshine, won’t you stay?

You know I always liked that empty road
No place to be and miles to go
But miles to go is miles away
Hello sunshine, won’t you stay?

And miles to go is miles away
Hello sunshine, won’t you stay?
Hello sunshine, won’t you stay?
Hello sunshine

And — YES! — I have permission to post this!!!

I mentioned the “Desperado” tattoo early on, and here it is (and, yes, you can’t really see him too well, but that’s him):

And I’m thinking that’s probably it for now.

I’m going to work on the novel until I hear from Sandra.

Enjoy your Saturday, wherever you are in the world!

I leave you with another great one from Flaco Jiménez and the Texas Tornados!!

“Who Were You Thinkin’ Of?”, 1990. Really fun! Enjoy, gang!

“Who Were You Thinkin’ Of?”

Who were you thinkin’ of
When we were makin’ love
Last night?
Was it a good-lookin’ stranger
Or a close friend of mine?

You didn’t wanna quit
When we was into it
Last night
Who were you thinkin’ of
When we were lovin’ last night?

Who were you thinkin’ of
When I was makin’ love
To you?
There was a smile on your face
I ain’t seen in some time

You got more out of it
Than I put into it
Last night
Who were you thinkin’ of
When we were lovin’ last night?

Who were you thinkin’ of
When we were makin’ love
Last night?
There was a smile on your face
I ain’t seen in some time

You didn’t wanna quit
When we was into it
Last night
Who were you thinkin’ of
When we were lovin’ last night?

Who were you thinkin’ of
When we were makin’ love
Last night?
Was it a good-lookin’ stranger
Or a close friend of mine?

You didn’t wanna quit
When we was into it
Last night
Who were you thinkin’ of
When we were lovin’ last night?
Who were you thinkin’ of
When we were lovin’ last night?

A great day in the Hinterlands!

Can you say “58 degrees Fahrenheit”??!!

Wow, gang. What a great night’s sleep I had here. No AC. Not even any fans. I even had to close some of the windows because it got chilly! Yay!

And this morning — the sun is shining and it will only be a high of 78 degrees. And it’s supposed to stay this way for the next few days.

************

I have a weird schedule this weekend. A double shift today and a double shift on Sunday, but I have all of Saturday OFF. And I will spend that working on updates to our play, “The Guide to Being Fabulous”!!

And the sooner I can get the updates on the play finished and sent back over to Sandra, the sooner I get to have another date with my eHarmony guy! Yay!

I’m not sure when I’m going to stop calling him my eHarmony guy and give him a name. I guess we’ll find out. But for now, gang…

Wow, yesterday was perfect. Even though the minute I arrived at Tequilaville, the sky let loose with a torrential downpour. And for some mysterious reason, every single parking spot in front of the restaurant was already taken — even though it was only noon. It usually doesn’t get busy there until later.

So, yes, I had to park in the side parking lot. And yes, I was wearing a sundress and flipflops, but I also had a little denim jacket on and I had an umbrella, so my feet got really wet, but that was the worst of it.

And my friend was already there, waiting for me, staying dry under the roof overhang. And he had brought me a FLOWER!!! Picked from his property.

Loyal readers of this lofty blog no doubt recall how much I love flowers. So, that right there — greeting me with a flower when he doesn’t even know yet how much I love flowers — made me so happy.

We really had the best time. We were at the restaurant for 2 hours. And then, since it was raining and we couldn’t go to the park, we went to the local mall instead, and sat inside and talked for another hour and a half — and then walked around inside the mall a little bit, holding hands.

Is that too cool???

And everyone was sort of smiling at us — you know: Look at those cute old people. But, honestly — emotionally –it was truly like we were teenagers again. (And teenagers from the 1970s, no less!) It was just so perfect.

And then he had errands to run in town. And I had errands to run in town. So we said our farewells (and kissed (!!) goodbye in the parking lot).

And, YES! We spent last evening talking for 3 more hours on the phone!

Okay. Before I forget —

From the Copyright Alliance today:

“On July 21, Copyright Alliance CEO Keith Kupferschmid had an opinion piece published in DC Journal, titled A “Win-Win-Win” Path for AI, as part of our AI and Copyright campaign. In the piece, Kupferschmid dispels a number of false narratives that are being perpetuated by tech fear mongers, including the notion that AI will only win if IP and copyright protections no longer exist…”

“”The United States has a long and storied tradition of strong protections for intellectual property. These protections have led the United States to dominate the world in technological and cultural progress … AI developers insist that licensing is impossible given the enormous volume of copyright works they seek to use, but that claim doesn’t hold up to scrutiny. Most of the big AI companies already license a vast volume of creative works for their consumers, and digital markets for music, books, films, and television programming are robust and mature … Contrary to claims that these AI training deals are impossible to make at scale, a robust free market is already emerging in which hundreds (if not thousands) of licensed deals between AI companies and copyright owners have been reached…”

Also, just a head’s up– the cost of printing paperback and hardcover books over at LULU.com has increased, so the prices of all of my print titles published at LULU.com have officially gone up today. Sorry about that, gang!

Prices of eBooks remain the same, though.

[Also, please remember that if you search for any of my books at either site, you have to click that you want to be shown explicit content, otherwise some of the books won’t come up.]

Okay! Here’s this!!

I’ve posted it before, but here it is again! (Yes, okay, it’s for my new friend. Rumor has it that he sort of likes this song…)

From the fabulous 1970s! Neil Young’s classic, “Heart of Gold”, 1972.

Enjoy, gang.

“Heart Of Gold”

I want to live
I want to give
I’ve been a miner for a heart of gold
It’s these expressions
I never give
That keep me searching for a heart of gold

And I’m getting old
Keep me searching for a heart of gold
And I’m getting old

I’ve been to Hollywood
I’ve been to Redwood
I crossed the ocean for a heart of gold
I’ve been in my mind
It’s such a fine line
That keeps me searching for a heart of gold

And I’m getting old
Keeps me searching for a heart of gold
And I’m getting old

Keep me searching for a heart of gold
You keep me searching and I’m growing old
Keep me searching for a heart of gold
I’ve been a miner for a heart of gold

c- 1972 Neil Young

Yep. That’s basically all I’m doing right now.

I’m leaving to meet the eHarmony guy for lunch in 2 hours. (And I have been awake & out of bed for 4 hours already.)

We are both a little anxious, of course, since we can’t help but get our hopes up after something like 16 and a half hours of phone conversations over the space of one week .

But we both agree that, at the very least, we are already friends.

It’s overcast here and maybe going to rain, like, ALL day. But at least the temperatures have dropped. It’s not going to get higher than 77 degrees Fahrenheit!!

And that right there means that BOTH of us will be able to drink THINK! Yay!!

***********

That’s really all that’s going on here, gang. It has been such a long time since I’ve been out on a bona fide date. Not a hook-up. And an actual date with someone I didn’t know beforehand — wow, that’s been something like almost 20 years.

It feels so cool. Plus the stuff that he and I have already talked about — there is just something about him that has felt like a sort of homecoming for my soul. Just because we have so much in common — the way we look at life.

(Plus, he’s a fan of reruns of “The Waltons”. If you are a long-time reader of this lofty blog then you know how fucking amazing that is to me. My favorite show of all time — that show literally helped me survive my intensely unhappy family life in the 1970s.)

“Good night, John Boy…”

So it’s just been a great feeling — our conversations. On so many levels. The past feels like it has the potential to completely heal.

****************

And that’s really all I’ve got for now.

Have a great Thursday, wherever you are in the world.

Thanks for visiting!

I love you guys. See ya!

I leave you with this!!

Life right this minute, and also back in 1973. Jackson Browne, “Red Neck Friend”. From his album, For Everyman. Enjoy, gang.

“Red Neck Friend”

Pretty little one
How has it all begun?
They’re teaching you how to walk
But you’re already on the run
Little one-
What you gonna do?
Little one-
Honey, it’s all up to you

Now your daddy’s in the den shootin’ up the evening news
Mama’s with a friend, lately she’s been so confused
Little one-
Come on and take my hand
I may not have the answer but I believe I got a plan

Honey you shake and I’ll rattle and we’ll roll on down the line
And see if we can’t get in touch with a very close friend of mine
But let me clue you in, it ain’t like him
To argue or pretend-
Honey let me introduce you to my redneck friend

Well they’ve got a little list of all those things of which they don’t approve
They’ve got to keep their eyes on you or you might make your move
Little one-
I really wish you would
Little one-
I think the damage would do you good

Honey you shake and I’ll rattle and we’ll roll on down the line
We’re going to forget all about the battle
It’s gonna feel so fine
‘Cause he’s the missing link, the kitchen sink-
Eleven on a scale of ten
Honey let me introduce you to my redneck friend

Honey you shake and I’ll rattle and we’ll roll on down the line
I’m going to try to swing you up into my saddle
And then we’ll run but you’ll think we’re flyin’
Now honey don’t just stand there
Lookin’ like this dream will never end
Honey let me introduce you to my redneck friend

c – 1973 Jackson Browne

Okay! Back at it!

I tell you, gang, 2 days off in a row and I feel like I never want to work again….

To think that for something like 15 years, all I had to do each day was sit at my desk and write. I miss those days. Those heady deadlines.

However.

Back at it!

My favorite nearly-95-year-old Japanese client and I will be heading out for sushi and sashimi today. And I’m sure we will have great conversations. Laugh a lot. Revisit his amazing past a lot. And have a pretty great day. So, once again, I can’t really complain!

***************

Then I’ll head home, have my dinner while watching wonderfully silly reruns of” Frazier”, take my shower, head into the air-conditioned bedroom — and probably talk all evening on the phone with the eHarmony guy!

We chatted for 3 1/2 hours last night!

And it’s not like we ever have a moment of awkward silence or anything. We just talk on and on and on, and it’s been like that since the very first time we talked on the phone!

So here’s hoping, gang.

Tomorrow of course is the big day — we meet in person. We’ll have lunch at the glamorous Tequilaville. And if lunch goes well, we plan to take a walk in the park. Weather permitting.

I know I’m not allowed to write about him, but I’m guessing it’s okay to say that, even while he and I have had completely different types of lives, when we were both teenagers (we’re practically the same age), we lived in Columbus. So we have so many cultural memories in common from back then. And that feels so cool. I am so accustomed to being around people that I literally have nothing in common with from the past.

Okay. So I better stop right there before I start “writing about him”!!

Me, not writing about him!

*****************

Wow, okay!

So yesterday — the Nick Cave and the AI thing was all over Instagram. And almost everyone was just as opinionated as I was, for the most part.

But what I forgot to say in my post yesterday — even though I linked to the Red Hand Files, I didn’t mention that Nick Cave’s post was about having a different perspective now — regarding AI images, at least — after seeing what his friend had done with the “Tupelo” AI video. (You can read it in full here.)

A few people on Instagram were actually really nasty about Nick changing his mind about (perspective on) AI. There are always those few who, no matter what topic Nick is writing about — they just go for his throat.

At that point, I always click the handy “unfollow” button!! (I am so totally NOT impartial when it comes to Nick Cave…)

Anyway!

This was really cool! The original lyrics to “Tupelo”, posted yesterday by RossAWaterman:

And here’s another photo from Arles, when Nick received his literary medal:

**************

And on a totally different topic!

I’m still awaiting one final quote regarding the home improvement loan, but I got the carpenter’s quote last night and, if for any reason, I can’t get the loan until next year, his quote was actually affordable so I might pay for it out of my own pocket — fixing the very ancient and very-giving-way-now basement stairs. In an effort to avoid THIS some day soon (wouldn’t be my best look, even if I were wearing a sundress!):
